International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction: Family and Community Resilience Fair 2024
In celebration of the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction 2024, the City Government of Makati hosted its annual Family and Community Resilience Fair with the theme, “Game On, Kabataan! Build a Future-Ready and More Resilient Makati with #ResilientNextGenMakatizens” last October 11, 2024, at the Makati City Hall Quadrangle.
The yearly Family and Community Resilience Fair aims to strengthen the culture of resilience in Makati City. For the past year, the celebration highlighted children and youth as agents of change in building a disaster-free future.
Education as key to empowerment
The theme for the Family and Community Resilience Fair is in line with the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNDRR) theme for IDDRR of highlighting education in protecting and empowering the youth for a disaster-free future. The UNDRR calls on countries to harness the education sector in reducing disaster risks of school-aged children through safe schools and education facilities, age-appropriate education on disaster risks, and implementation of the Comprehensive School Safety Framework 2022-2030.
Creative DRR Education Program
In collaboration with CityNet-Plus Arts Center for Creative Partnerships, the Makati DRRM Office engaged teachers from the Department of Education-Makati in a Creative DRR Education Program Development Training as part of the Makati DRRM Academy Project. Teachers from Makati City public schools participated in a two-phase workshop to develop localized creative and science-based DRRM games and activities.
For the first phase of the training, the teachers were able to learn from game development experts from Japan and Thailand, while for phase two, they were provided the opportunity to create prototypes of the Makati-based games and activities they have developed through a series of workshops. These games and activities were then professionally developed in Japan through CityNet-Plus Arts.
Developing #ResilientNextGenMakatizens through DRR Games
Teachers proudly showcased the games and activities they have developed in the Family and Community Resilience Fair. The games tackled the different disaster scenarios based on the top three hazards in Makati City---fire, flood, and earthquakes. Around 600 Makatizens were able to participate in the booths and exhibits empowering everyone to build a better, safer, and more resilient Makati.
